Anna Thomas MBE, Founding Director of IFOW, said:
“Marking the next step of the Government’s growth mission, the 2025 Spending Review sets a welcome tone of longer-term investment in infrastructure and growth, and communities and capabilities - with technology promoted as a catalyst and driver to accelerate these.
“We welcome the growing emphasis on building the conditions for good jobs across the country which – as evidenced by our Pissarides Review - is key to unlocking the potential of people and places right across the UK, from Truro to Thurso.
“As we navigate this period of rapid technological transformation, the test now will be whether or not the Industrial Strategy can drive and align these investments to create good jobs and manage well the profound transitions facing the country.
“To achieve this – and build national, local and individual economic security and resilience - we will need a bold strategic vision, meaningful partnership working and a new approach to policymaking. In particular, the welcome investments in AI and automation technologies must be governed carefully and directed towards boosting human choice and capabilities. By reducing reliance on foreign models and services, the UK’s most pressing challenges can be prioritised.
“We particularly welcome the Government’s commitment to reforming the Green Book. This offers an opportunity to redress imbalances in investment and introduce new measures to track, report on and account for social value and a wider range of targets and impacts. Reforms should look beyond short-term economic gains and include new capabilities and good work measures, including the distribution, conditions and quality of work and long-term community wellbeing.
“We look forward to continued work across departments and providing evidence to help ensure that every pound of public investment builds a future in which everyone can flourish through the new technological revolution.”
